The United States didn't exist then

Washington couldn't possibly have had an allegiance to the United States. There wasn't one. And the United States of America that was born that he did become President of...was a brand spanking new country that allowed slavery everywhere inside of its borders. Just like the Confederate States of America was trying to become. Again, I'm not saying that as any sort of support or excuse for the Confederate flag. I'm saying it to point out that holding the United States flag up as this thing we should worship is arguably every bit as flawed.
Just as you say, freedom fighter vs. terrorist is a matter of perspective. I don't think any of the slaves that Thomas Jefferson owned considered Jefferson to have been a "freedom fighter," regardless of his role in helping found this "Land of the Free" of ours.
