so as to create an independent, slave owning country. I'm not defending either Washington or Lee, mind you. But one could draw that parallel if so inclined. Slavery was abolished in Britain over 30 years before the American Civil War. So you could make the case that the George Washington-led military rebellion against British control of the the colonies resulted in slavery lasting another 30 years longer in America than it would have under British rule. Just like slavery would have lasted much longer in the South if their Robert E. Lee-led military rebellion had won.
