It is a key part of it, but it's also the fact that preserving slavery was a huge part of why they fought the war in the first place. More important than what the guys did, though, is why those statues exist in the first place. They were erected as symbols in response to black Americans pushing for equal rights.
Memorials to the average "impoverished rural schmoes" don't seem very controversial to me.
