'We hold these truths to be self-evident...' The people have decided that these are rights we are going to secure. But we only have those rights because we have the power of the people behind that statement.
I actually believe in a creator. But he only gave us two things IMO that is life and free-will. What we chose to do with them is totally up to us. In most civilized societies we have accepted some common basic human rights. Those are a somewhat new development in the history of man though. For most of history the average man had basically no rights. Why? Because he did not have the power to secure them or someone with the power to secure them for him.
