A participation trophy does not mean you won anything. It means you participated and finished a task..much like say..a certificate that you get when you complete a training.

The winning and losing comment was a separate thing. Sports teaches you both how to deal with both winning and losing.

I really don't care if they give participation trophies or not....I think it is quite funny how the extremists on both sides thinks there is only one answer..either give to call..or give to none....let the local league decide how to handle it.
