I was never in the competitive sport ranks when I was younger. But even then I don't remember getting a participation trophy. But even if I did, I wouldn't have cared much, since everyone would have gotten one.

That being said, I understand the point if it's the competitive leagues handing out trophies for everyone, but if your kid is not overly competitive and just likes to go out and play a game, then who cares?

It's not division 1 basketball players that are getting participation trophies I'd imagine, so I'm not sure to what he's referring.
