I wasn't very good at sports so I ended up finding a pretty non-competitive league. We didn't all get trophies but it was about going out and enjoying the game, rather than a tournament to win or something similar.

The competitive leagues still existed, still do. It had no effect on them.

I was saying that there are leagues that are more competitive and less competitive. If a division 1 athlete played youth sports my guess is that they didn't give trophies out to everyone.
