"loaded" because you will have familiar names to fans. Experience will help some, but it always comes down to talent. You need a lot more talent.
I try not to fall into that trap with Illinois this year. Lots of experienced players and two deep or more at every position. But is the talent enough? And that is with a number of top 100 players.
Here is the depth chart since Missouri plays Illinois.
C Mike Thorne (6-11 Sr. who was averaging 14 and 8 before being injured before the Missouri game last year)
F Leron Black (6-7 So. who was a top 50 recruit who missed almost all of last year)
G Malcolm Hill (6-6 Sr. who averaged 18 last year and is primed for a big season)
G Jalen Coleman-Lands (6-3 So. who was a top 35 recruit and was one of the best three point shooters in the BT last year as a frosh)
G Tracy Abrams (6-2 Sr. who is back after multiple injuries. A top 75 recruit is a tough defender and double digit scorer the last time he played)
Bench:
C Maverick Morgan (6-10 Sr. who started a lot last year after Thorne's injury. Had several 20 pt. games)
F Michael Finke (6-10 So. who could beat out Black with his shooting skills)
G Kipper Nichols (6-6 Fr. Just wait. This kid can play)
G Aaron Jordan (6-5 So. was a top 75 recruit who was considered one of the top shooters in the Midwest)
G Te'jean Lucas (6-0 Fr. point who was a top 150 on Rivals.
Also 6-7 DJ Williams, a top 75 recruit from Simeon and Jaylen Tate, a Sr. who has started a lot of games at Illinois. Also from Simeon.
That is a lot of experience and quite a bit of talent. Last year's disaster was in part because of losing 3 starters for the year and two other players for long stretches. If this team stays healthy, they have a chance to be pretty decent.
And 2017 class is top 4 nationally right now. Will drop to top 15 unless Groce pulls off five star Wilkes in a couple of weeks.
My point is, there are a lot of teams who have depth, questions of pure talent, and hope for the future.
