Abuse is often invisible, especially when perpetrated by an authority figure. When a bystander doesn't notice that a figure of authority is behaving abusively, it has nothing to do with being indifferent or inattentive or anything. It is completely plausible that a player loves and cares for a teammate, witnesses first-hand abusive behavior from a coach, and doesn't make the connection that such behavior is abusive. It has nothing to do with the player being uncaring, reckless, unethical, selfish, a bad person, or anything like that; it's simply an unfortunate way the human mind subconsciously can cope with such situations.
Again, I don't want to get into this too much here, as it's a touchy and complex subject.
