Work gaps are an example. Employers are less likely to hire someone who has a long gap in their work history. Layoffs happen to good employees. Job markets are sometimes good, sometimes bad. Yet employers often are biased away from those who don’t currently have a job in favor of those who do.
Not everything can be overcome just by working more. Meritocracy is BS, because it doesn’t really exist. The smartest and the best don’t always rise to the top. That’s why networking is so important. Often who you know is more important than capabilities and performance.
