small modular nuclear plants could actually be a tremendous boon in cleaning up nuclear waste storage problems. They could allegedly use the waste already generated by the earlier generations of nuclear plants, and the byproduct was very low level wastes there were virtually impossible to be diverted to use in nuclear weapons... or at least that would not generally be economically feasible for potential terrorists (including governments?) to convert to weapons grade.
It was my impression that the technology was already there and several US companies were lobbying to get permitting done so that they could start building them.
China apparently has some new ones, though I'm not sure if they're using the new technology discussed above.
The US & Europe went with the original versions because they *wanted* waste that could be easily converted to weapons grade.
