You can weight schedule, road vs. home, margin of victory, effect of turnovers, and countless other metrics.
They like USC because they lose close games. Another model might penalize USC more because they lose the games.
One model might penalize Miami more because of their defense and the model assumes it's going to catch up to them. Another might not look at offensive and defense outputs and simply who they beat and lost to. Lots of ways to skin the cat.
