Scripture. What a surprise that two different humans strenuously disagree as to how to interpret the verses in question. Behold, the chaos of Protestantism. Paraphrasing some other verses, it began to sound like “Each man believes what is right in his own eyes.” And we know how that turned out.
In fact, Jesus established and left behind an authority to make those interpretations—The Church, His Church, headed by His disciples, led by Peter. That Church, The Roman Catholic Church, still exists today, and it’s interpretations of scripture, not those of each fallible man, are authoritative.
