I was at a Cardinals / Rays baseball game at Tropicana Field a few weeks ago (that was MLB stadium #29 for me - I'm headed over to Houston in a couple of weeks to catch the Astros and the Orioles at Minute Maid Park - that will make all 30 existing MLB stadiums - for whatever that's worth. I've actually been to 43 MLB stadiums including former ball parks that are now either torn down or used for something else).
Anyway, a good friend of mine met me for the game - and brought along a buddy who was a retired cop from Miami. When the cop found out I was from Mizzou, he asked me if I remembered a former basketball coach at Mizzou by the name of Daly. Told him I sure did - lots of memories of Rich Daly.
He said he gets together with Rich on a fairly regular basis - I think they play golf - and asked if I had any words of wisdom for Rich.
I said "Ask him why he didn't call a time out when Syracuse went on their run in the 2nd half to beat Mizzou in the Sweet 16 of the 1989 NCAA tournament".
That was the year Norm got sick from the cancer and blacked out on the plane to Oklahoma and Daly took over head coaching duties. I think that Sweet 16 NCAA game against the Orange was in Minneapolis - and we had Syracuse dead to rights - until they went on something like a 15 point run in the 2nd half - and Daly refused to call a timeout to change the momentum.
But I told this guy that I'm pretty sure Daly would immediately know exactly what I was referring to.
That Mizzou team was a final 4 team.
