They were generally not recruited by the self-proclaimed elite schools, but were thought of as very tough very competitive players from tough neighborhoods.
Hardy, Coward, Buntin and Doug not recruited by Michigan, but Michigan State was more interested in them, especially Doug, and Jud Heathcote tried to make life difficult for Rich up there. There was a lot of excitement when Doug was signed. There was a scrimmage in Concordia or Lexington where fans got their first look at him and he did his thing.
Missouri made a run at a Chris Webber, who was from a private school, but he took his talents to Ann Arbor.
