of 14 if OU and Texas joined, reducing the payout for each program. The contract was negotiated only last year…why would ESPN want to renegotiate?
The only way that this would make sense is if it’s the opening gambit of the four super conferences being formed, but the timing is off.
Of more significance, ESPN and FOX refused to agree to early renegotiation of the current contract with the Big XII. Why would ESPN agree to pay more for OU and Texas in the SEC if they already refused to pay extra in the Big XII?
This is just a negotiation ploy by Texas and OU to get more money out of ESPN and FOX. The SEC would be foolish to help unless it meant more money for current members, which it won’t. It’s very possible that a stakeholder, like A&M, found out and planted the story early enough so that the anti-Texas forces could gather strength ahead of time to effectively stop the move. That would go a long way in explaining why the A&M AD was ready with a statement as soon as the story broke. With that in mind, it would explain why the timing seems off because it is.
