Before that it was a nationally relevant program, after that point it has not been. The powers that be hired a D2 coach who was last involved with D1 basketball in the prior century as an assistant and allowed him to create a staff of former D2, JUCO, and high school coaches. For 3 years in a row we were the worst major conference program in the nation. Our program has not recovered from the atrophy of that decision, and may never recover. Its not any more complicated than that. There are significant and long term ramifications of giving up on men's basketball to such an absurd degree. No other serious program would have ever gone to such idiotic lengths, it is a singularly stupid hiring decision in the history of the sport and allowed to fester for 3 long seasons.
If you make it any more complicated than that, you are looking for alternative excuses. That is the problem, it destroyed MU basketball. It was a clear signal that we don't care about the sport.
