If you grow up in certain areas of metro StL, you dream of getting the hell out, not staying nearby. And you grow up hearing that StL is one of the most racist cities in America and Boone County is even worse. That surely doesn’t help. I don’t think they are any different than countless other areas in the US but hearing that as you grow up surely doesn’t lead one to wanting to stick around. Plus MU had one coach worth a damn and he was seen as a small town hick coach by many in StL. And the others had no real pull compared to the coaches that landed most of those guys at more established powers. Martin is a pure play to change all this and he has turned MU into a landing spot for non-elite guys from that area. Still not a draw for those with better options to win big. be interesting to see if he is around long enough to change that.
