Would suggest that blue ribbon programs require strong upfront commitments from both the school's administration and fan base. Both Tiger football and basketball have suffered from a lack of such commitments.
A few points:
Dan Devine is probably the best and most successful Tiger football coach. He left Mizzou because it wouldn't commit to giving him the same resources that Bob Deveany was getting at Nebraska.
Barbara Uehling refused to let the football program take Prop 48 kids when Nebraska, K-State and Kansas were prospering with them.
By the early 1990's Tiger football facilities were the worst in the Big Eight.
When Mizzou joined the SEC its football budget was the lowest in the conference. It continues to be somewhere in the bottom fourth.
Construcction of the SEZ a couple of years ago and the completion of the new indoor practice facility will mean Tiger football's facilities will finally SEC quality roughly 12 years or so after joining the conference..
Tiger home attendance the past several years has struggled to be eighty percent of capacity in one of the smaller stadiums in the SEC.
The Tiger AD's total budget is in the bottom three of the SEC schools.
The total for gifts to the Athletic Departmetn (TSF giving, etc.) is among the lowest in the SEC.
Bottom line is it is much easier to build a program if the school and fan base commit and provide the necessary resources and support upfront. Going back to Devine, that has never really happened at Mizzou and the records and status of the programs reflect that. The one major exception was Bill Laurie's gift and the State Legislature's appropriation for Mizzou Arena.
And in terms of recruiting it's probably much easier to convince a kid to join a program that can say we've won x conference championshilps, been to y bowl games and to the CFP than to tell him come play for us and you can help us achieve those goals.
