learning is effective for a small percentage of students. The rest really struggle with it.
In the past, pre-pandemic, I have monitored students using totally online systems. My experience was that most of the students got a couple of weeks of work done every quarter ( 2 months). But for a highly motivated student, they can fly through the curriculum. I had one girl complete nine semesters worth of work in just one semester using the online system.
Most students need the personal interaction, question and answer time, and just the personal touch that comes with regular lessons.
The hybrid model that most schools have been using this year is an abject failure. Most schools have reported failure rates that doubled and this was after interventions to lessen student work, excuse missing work, and cover less material.
The schools that have been totally remote aspire to having a failure rate that is only double their normal.
