qualify for admission to the college they are attending?
My guess is roughly zero.
At tech i know two students who were given scholarships after two years as walk ons. Neither was offered a scholarship out of high school.
Both played sparingly although one became the "starting" fullback and got to run the ball about once or twice per game.
Both had GPAs in excess of 3.6. They were the typical white kids on a big time sports program. Over achievers, hard workers and intelligent kids. Not very athletic, not D1 level football players. The team needed them to boost the average GPA of the "student athletes".
My guess is that most "student" athletes would never in a million years qualify for admission.
Those are the kids who get the biggest benefit out of going to college. They will not play in the NBA or NFL. But their talents got them a full scholarship to a major university.
And they want to be paid. Cash.
OK, pay them. And then make them pay tuition. And make them be students. Make they could i dunno, go to friggin class. Make them earn grades that keep them on course to graduate.
As opposed to the UNC way of allowing athletes to take JR high school level classes and having their "tutors" take their tests for them.
Neither of those will ever happen. There is too much money involved and too many racial political implications of having everyone with the same standards.
You know, equality is racist. We need equity.
As it is i am sick of watching semi literate professional athletes with PC billboards on the backs of their jerseys, lecturing us about equality, unity or whatever.
College sports permitted a bit of an opportunity to believe that kids at
MY ALMA MATER were better than that.
If kids are paid to attend to go to college i will no longer be a fan of my college sports. They will no longer be students, just mercenaries playing for money and living somewhere near the VT campus.
Semi pro athletes with nothing in common with me or any real student at VT.
