Really, players are not forced to attend practices or associate with coaches and teammates?
Not at the point of a gun, no.
And since there are penalties but not CRIMINAL penalties, it's totally different.
The main difference is voluntary vs. involuntary, but yes, the fact that the involuntary association also imposes criminal penalties should give one even more reason to distrust it.
Isn't american citizenship and residence here "voluntary in the first place"?

No, that would be the direct opposite of an affirmative act. That's a passive act.
Isn't the ability to leave the team "the ability to immediately disassociate"?
Uprooting your family and renouncing your citizenship does not happen immediately, and the govt will take a bite out of you in the process.
