If you're speaking about previous to that, they've had plenty of success without winning a championship. As an MU fan, you should know that championships aren't the only reason to follow a team. The gameday experience at Arrowhead is fantastic, IMO. It's as close to the best college atmospheres as an NFL team can be. MU hasn't had that kind of atmosphere in a while.
I'm a huge Chiefs fan and have been my whole life. I can tell you that if they played games in Columbia, I'd go to far fewer games than I do currently. Attending a football game is a big time commitment. You add 4 hours to that for driving and it becomes an even bigger commitment. You can call it an excuse, but it all factors into a decision to attend or not and it's valid.
As you said, you're speaking from an MU fan first. Not many Tigers fans have the Tigers as their #1 team. Many have Blues or Cards or Chiefs in front of that. That also factors into decisions of attending games.
