First and foremost, an entire generation of fans were lost during the 80s and 90s due to a lack of financial support for the program combined with absolutely awful football. But one thing that hasn't been mentioned is the cost of attending games, especially for fans with families. When you factor in the cost of fuel (from KC, STL, Springfield, the bootheel, etc.), food (both pre- or post-game meals, concessions, etc.), tickets, parking, etc., it can cost a family several hundred dollars for each football weekend, not to mention a lot of time. In a state with professional sports, that makes it tough for the ardent sports fan and his family to justify attending both pro and college sporting events.
Having said all that, if Coach D can build a winning program, I think you'll see attendance/support start to improve again. How much is anyone's guess.
