The tutor’s statements by themselves were sufficient to establish the violations. Nothing else was required. Tutor had gone public long before NCAA got involved in case.
Fighting the case would have only drawn out the proceeding.
North Carolina case was factually different. Sham courses athletes took at Carolina were open to all students, not just athletes. Only athletes got help from the tutor, special help for athletes not available to regular students. Same argument could not be made by NCAA against Carolina.
Had Mizzou taken a hard line, it likely would have made no difference in findings and penalty could be greater.
Those who say Mizzou and Carolina show the right course of action is to stonewall the NCAA are drawing the wrong conclusion from the two cases.
