opinion that the cotton gin in fact revived slavery rather than diminished it.

It made cotton farming much more profitable at a time in which according to some historians, cotton and slavery were if not dying, they were diminished.

I agree in the main that slavery may have been the easy way out for the south. It may have in fact inhibited innovation since there was no need for anything but the sweat and blood of the slaves.
