How much cheaper was it to keep slaves than to hire some poor immigrant for pennies a day?
Slave owners had to feed, clothe and house each of their slaves 24/7. They also had to hire men to watch over those slaves all the time. Instead of slavery the north just used poor immigrants to do the same type of jobs. They paid them a pitiful wage and worked them ungodly hours but when the whistle blew they could forget about them until their next shift started.
Slavery was a poor economic system that would have died away in a few decades if not for the civil war. It did greatly shape our country (sadly) but it did not define our country for all time.
