is probably economically. It allowed the production of goods and services (cotton, for example, in the South), that engendered trade with other nations. It created alliances between us and other nations who were reliant upon that commerce stream. It allowed for aggregation of wealth among certain individuals and states and our nation, which propelled us forward in terms of a mature nation-state.
