"A fascinating subject was turned into a PC indoctrination effort as EVERYTHING was seen through the prism of slavery, racism and oppression."
I have a distant relative on my mother's side from New Jersey who fought for the north in the civil war and was a prolific writer of letters home to his family until he was killed at The Battle of Spotsylvania Court House charging across a field at age 19. The letters survived and were passed down. My mom actually transcribed them. He was a simple farm boy, but well educated.
He was a huge believer in his cause, which was preserving the union and beating the rebels who he considered traitors. However, he never once wrote about fighting to free slaves or even about slavery in dozens of letters home. In fact the only mention of blacks at all was his company came up on some on the road in Virginia (I think) and gave them a "rough time." Have no idea what he meant by that.
Last letter was from a surviving friend or officer, I can't recall which, informing the family of his death.
