always honest post above, the political causes of the war should be separated from the causes that the soldiers believed in.
The preservation of the union was paramount to many yankees. Slavery was secondary or tertiary in the list of reasons to fight and die.
The right to self governance and states' rights were in the forefront of many of the confederate soldiers' thoughts and deeds. They saw themselves as not unlike the patriots of 1776, fighting a governing body that did not consider their interests and needs. Again slavery was not the prevailing factor to many of the hoi polloi of the time.
It is fair in my opinion to say that slavery was the main reason especially from the political standpoint, for the war. But it is far from the only reason.
