tried the former for awhile and was slowly losing some weight but when I switched to the latter it accelerated the weight loss seemingly five fold. You want a balanced diet, just not much of it.
That said, there's a reason they have you do a pasta dinner the night before a marathon, you do have to really carb up for it. In my case I got used to that lifestyle but stopped running hardly at all for many years, which was a lethal combo.
