would dismiss the lawsuit in a nanosecond.
It was a matter of public record (by law) that anyone doing to a standard background check would have found. Therefore, the paper had every right to bring these public records to the attention of the public.
And consider this: If the victim's family could sue the Oregonian for reporting this, then every news agency/outlet that reports on a similar case in the future would be liable for damages. That would make reporting on these cases impossible, and actually protect the pedophiles (thus endangering society) by keeping their crimes out of the public spotlight.
