There numerous views of the gospels and when they were written and so forth and people will be arguing until they heve devine inspiration to solve it. I do think that there was a Quelle that they got most of the main content from. According to Jewish rabbinical tradition someone will take minutes of his sermons or teachings. probably Matthew however James and John were not illiterate the gospels. The fundementalist or orthodox didn't change things. tghe change was due to a process called form criticism which really came after Wellhausen theory " Documenatary Hypothosis" which was later decided that his presuppositons were wrong ( not supported by archeology) Any way you are talking about an endless study. So I will not say poor scholarship maybe reasoning that is biased
