The crucifix was used by Rome to terrify the public into submission. The Pharisees worked hand-in-hand with the occupying Roman forces and if they didn't care for this charismatic rabbble-rouser who may have been a far more violent and incendiary figure than the sweet shepherd characterized decades later in the stories. Those WERE politically revolutionary times. The Gospel of Thomas eschews narrative all together presenting lines alleged to have been spoken by the Nazarene and some of those lines verge on violence.
