I am not one that believes you will get a sudden influx of great teachers if you doubled the pay. Teachers that go into teaching now do so because it is what they want to do and a vast majority that I have met are very good at that job. Including those in KC and KCK. Raising the pay, although it would be nice for me, would not have a major impact on teacher quality.
Outside of a few advanced topics subject matter knowledge is not the most important factor IMO. The worst teachers, as a group, that I have observed are those with PHDs. It takes a ton of intelligence and hard work to get most PHDs. Those skills do not translate well to actual teaching. They often struggle 'bringing it down' to the students level and often times lack the patience to work through the rough spots.
What I would like to see is a change so more of the education dollars actually make it down to the classroom. Education is way too top heavy today.
