It was estimated that 1 million Americans would have been required to invade the Japanese home islands with casualty rates as high as 30 percent or more. It would have been necessary to transport huge numbers of troops from Europe to the Pacific to accomplish this task. President Truman decided to drops the bombs in the alternative. I would definitely say the collateral damage was worth it. The United States didn't initiate this world wide conflict; however, it fell to us to end it!
