and our current Middleeastern wars I think you know the answer to that question.

Total war affects the populace and they demand a quick end so they can return to normality. Our modern wars have shielded the American populace and enemy civilians, as much as possible, from the effects of the war so there has been no huge outcry to end them on either side.
