The Dept. of Educ. Equity in Athletics Website reports the following numbers for Tiger Basketball for 2014/15.
Total revenue: $11,607,812
Total expenses: $5,746,352
Kim Anderson's contract reportedly guarantees him 1.1. million a year.
Subtracting Anderson's guaranteed 1.1 million for your hypothetical 5.0 million produces a difference of 3.9 million. The 5.0 million hypothetical coach needs to increase revenues (from the sources mentioned in the pasts below) by at least 3.9 million for the his hire to break even. That's a 33% increase in basketball revenue.
It should be noted the additional cost of a 5 million dollar coach may be more than just the difference in head coaching salaries. The 5 million dollar a year coach may require more fringe benefits (i.e. unlimited charter jet travel) and more expenses (i.e. a higher total amount for assistant coach, etc. salaries).
