Divisions in theory increase the league's odds at landing a team or two in the playoffs. A Conference Championship Game with just 10 teams means everything has to fall just right right for even 1 team to make the playoff and, more often than not, the risk is that a team would be knocked out with a CCG.

That's not a small thing but it hardly feels like enough to threaten your network partners.

Which indicates to me that something else is in play here.
