you can't get any closer to "local control" or any farther away from "big government" than that. The City of Austin put it on the ballot. Do you the people want fingerprinting, yes or no? Uber and Lyft spent tons and tons of cash on massive advertising campaigns to get the vote out in their favor. They lost fair and square. The people spoke out. Local control happened. And in response, Uber and Lyft packed their bags and ran away like babies, crying "big government, oppressive bureaucracy forced us out, wah wah!" all the way out the door.
And then, lo and behold, some new start ups emerged in Austin who were able to make what the local voters wanted work for their business model. What their competitors were not willing to do to succeed, they were, and now they are reaping the benefits. Capitalism and local control at its finest.
