Last season was a mulligan. Gates knew he didn't have the talent to make a run, and likely invested his time improving the players he knew would be here this year (Grill, Bates, Robinson) instead of the other roster dead weight that would be leaving (Honor, East, Carter).

It has paid off, 10-fold.
Who cares if he would have won 2 or 3 SEC games last year? How would that have improved things in any way?
