It means that race was a *factor* in his hiring. He may have been somewhat qualified, but he wasn't the *most* qualified.

Cuonzo, Haith, Mike Anderson... none of them were DEI hires (although Cuonzo was arguably hired for the wrong reason, to appease the Porters who preferred him).
Kim Anderson was MU's worst hire of all-time. It wasn't DEI, but it was for an equally disgraceful reason: nepotism.
When people are hired for reasons other than purely merit (DEI, nepotism, etc.) it should be called out.
Gates is NOT a good coach. A good coach would never go 0-19. This year, he's the beneficiary of the deepest roster MUBB has ever had, as I predicted would happen. The only "solution" following the 0-19 disaster was throwing copious amounts of NIL money at the problem to out-talent the competition. It works, but it's expensive, unsustainable, and diverts resources away from football and other programs.
