Year one, Gates was good enough to recruit, build team cohesion, and coach the team into a NCAA tournament squad.

Year two, Gates became another King George III, went insane and forgot how to coach, missed portal targets and injuries be damned.

Year three, Gates regained his sanity (since the AD moved on to another gig), won big in the portal (overpaying NIL money), recruited a very good freshman class, learned how to motivate and coach again, and has this team 14-3 and looking every bit a NCAA tourney team.

Some of you guys just refuse admit Gates didn't have the horses last year to sustain what he did his first year. Other than East III and Bates, the 2023-2024 team was devoid of talent, especial at 4 and 5 position. That's what made last year atrocious and all the coaching in the world or greatest coaches ever couldn't fix it.

This year's backups would give last year's starters all it could handle. Last year was atrocious because of lack of talent. Period.
