I could write an entire essay on this but how about just the bullet points
* Legal ramifications
* TV contracts
* You still will have to have a regulator because teams aren't just going to go all wild west. Tons of committees, and such, and at the end of the day you would just end up with another organization just like the NCAA only they would soak up even more money for them.
* The big kicker is the NCAA March Madness. They OWN that tournament. Thats over 1.2 billion dollars worth of revenue from that event alone. You really think the NCAA would let schools walk away just for football and let them play in the tournament, to say nothing of all the other sports. The NCAA isn't a have your cake and eat it too kind of organization.
Bottom line, while I would not say its never gonna happen, what I will say is it is very unlikely for a lot of reasons. We are almost at the point where there aren't many other decent teams to put into two mega conferences so there isn't much point in continuing to expand them, much less have them break off into their own.
