certainly not "at all costs", but losing Kul was a loss.

More than one thing can be true at once.
Kuligowski had overwhelming success here in his role as DL coach. He molded some 2 and 3-star players into all-conference performers. Our D-Line was an epicenter of Mizzou's success in the Pinkel years, probably 2nd only to our QB lineage of Brad/Chase/Blaine/James.
Kuligowski can also have been a source of drama and potential problem. I think we wouldn't have had the huge drop off in defensive performance in 2016-17 if Kul had still been here, but we'll never know.
