I saw the actual invoice from Shell for gas deliveries. Late 80's, they were paying (roughly, it varied) 66 cents for reg unleaded and charging 99 cents. So out of the 33 cents profit, he had to pay us for labor (to pump, it was a full service station) and the light bill (which was probably pretty high). The 66 cents included the franchise fee to Shell. And sure he had other expenses, but he made way more than the 1 cent/gallon that he claimed. The math just doesn't work to support that.
We sold about 5,000 gallons/day. At the 33 cents/gal "profit" that comes to $1650 per day. He paid us about $250/day for all the staff. So that leaves him with about $42,000/month for electricity and other expenses. He was making a killing on gas.
