advertising-based models versus the pay models. Until there is some sort of seismic shift in the industry and people just get fed up of having their data brokered and every aspect of their life monetized, it's not going to change.

There is some hope given how well Apple is doing in their quest to limit advertising tracking and increasing privacy. But that's pretty much the only example of a major tech company having users pay for a service to get more privacy.
