Internet is a fantasy. Tigerboard is a great example. Even Nick had to tone things down here because of his advertisers and this place is a tiny grain of sand compared to the rest of what's out there.
The Internet has grown into what it is because large tech companies have pooled and leveraged their resources to take giant leaps forward. Take the 3 largest cloud services providers:
- Amazon: funds AWS via their online store (and ads therein)
- Microsoft: funds Azure via their business software and operating systems (and ads therein)
- Google: directly funds GCP via their Ad revenue
Without those other sources of revenue, none of those cloud platforms would exist. And if they don't exist, about half (or more) of the Internet as we know it today goes dark.
What's going to replace that? Some 90s-style conglomeration of thousands/millions of little sites each tailored to a small community of folks? Doesn't sound bad for us, the end users, but where's the money going to come from for tech innovation? That environment is not conducive to ad buys.
The only way out of this is likely government regulation which is not exactly what the 90s Internet spirit envisioned.
