immunity to a particular disease such that new infections naturally drop as there are not enough susceptible people for the disease to continue spreading at that rate.

The herd immunity threshold varies for each disease based upon how infectious it is. The greater the transmissibility the more people must have immunity such that the rate of spread will slow, then hold steady and finally decline.

The more people with immunity, the greater the protection for those without immunity.
