MU will succeed or fail based on if Cuonzo can actually coach. The current indication is that he can't, which would mean whomever makes up our roster is irrelevant.

If for some reason he is able to demonstrate the reason it looks like he can't coach is because he assembled a roster that isn't conducive to his coaching style (which happens, see 1995-96 for Norm or 2010-11 for Mike Anderson) then there is still a slim hope for a gradual rebuild and eventual success under Cuonzo.
